Two bacon egg and cheese bagels, and two chocolate chip bagels with butter. Didn't eat much all day to the point of dire hunger. I had gotten two bagels for immediate consumption and two for later, unfortunately my mouth was bigger than my stomach and I had to start the race burping up bacon and cheese.
I got a good start as a result of following the Colavita guys backwards on the course after everyone had already lined up. This being a tight course and well over a hundred guys spread out if you don't get a good starting position obviously you have allot of ground to make up. Energy not well spent.
The gun went and it was full gas. I made it across to an early move that was reabsorbed and immediately threw down an attack in the second to last turn. If you can get a clean line through this turn there is a good chance you'll get a gap. For about three laps I didn't look back and went as hard as I could.
Thoughts: I'm out here solo and there is still 45 to 50 laps to go. This is suicide. Oh well I'll try to get as many primes as I can get. Man this crowd is awesome. 30 to go, I got the midway prime, fuck 30 to go. If I get to twenty I'll eat my last gel. I just heard a spectator say how beautiful it is watching me take the corners, that's cool. 20 to go, I'll save my gel for ten to go just in case I have to put down the hammer. 16 to go, damn I'm going to catch the back of the pack, the crowd is going crazy. Alright, Chuck has seen me and now he's helping me get to the front, maybe me and him can go fast enough to where the break behind won't catch on before the finish. Damn, Chucks dyin, I'm fucked but I'll go as hard and as long as I can on the front. 3 to go, damn, the group caught on and now they have teammates to help them, I'll see if I can surf the front and still get up there.
I ended up third which I was happy with. I did chop Mike Friedman in the last corner by accident as I didn't see him coming up on the inside. Aside from that I couldn't have asked for a better race. I racked up a good ride for the team and a boat load of primes. The crowd was great and the energy was amazing. http://velonews.com/article/95015/van-gilder-and-damiani-score-at-iron-hill-usa-crits-race

Why is Fuentes listed as Evolution Cycling Team? Disguised teamwork or error in publishing?
Congrats on the result after putting in such an intense effort.
Congrats Russ. Killer results at Fitchburg RR and Iron Hill.

Man, that was awesome watching you lap the field, especially with the horsepower that was in that race. I lasted a whole 25 minutes, but had a blast watching all the MABRA guys kick some ass! Congratulations!
Thanks guys. Races like that are far and few between. The crowd is what makes a race, that night was about as good as it gets.
Any plans to make the jump to any one of those continental Pro teams you keep beating? I mean, with the kind of results you keep racking up, I would imagine more than a few would come knocking... Would you go? Congrats on Iron Hill.
The problem is, in cycling terms, I'm older than dirt. With the continental teams there are age restrictions, so to get on a decent team at my age you have to be well and above everyone else. Yeah maybe the possibility of a small team with minimal support, but thats such a hard way to go, especially at my age and having already been there. If you know of a good team thats looking let me know.
is this you?
